Persepolis

I think that the most important panel in this selection of the reading is: “I couldn’t bear looking at them there behind the glass. Nothing’s worse than saying goodbye. It’s a little like dying”. This panel exposes the theme of the separation between the main character and her parents, which is the main theme being explored in these few chapters. Satrapi has realized that this situation is not temporary, that she will probably never  live with her parents again. This few lines also set the mood for the upcoming chapters and represent a growth in the character of the protagonist.

Most important panel from reading due 2/2/15 – Persepolis

The most important panel from the section of Persepolis that was due today, in my opinion, is found at the bottom of page 153. This image depicts how difficult it was for Marjane’s parents to decide to let their 14 year old daughter go live in Austria, even though they understood it was safer and allowed for more freedom of expression. Marjane turns around one final time to watch her parents leave, as she recognizes that she will most likely never live with them again, while the reader is left looking at her parents’ empty, somber faces. In the background, I notice Marjane through a glass panel, saddened and helpless. This represents how great of a sacrifice this tight-knit family was willing to make for sake of their child. It helps me, as an audience member, empathize with the struggle that families such as Marjane’s in the Middle East had to make during this war-torn era.

“It would have been better to just go.”

Marjane is now at a point in her life where she is out of choices. With her scathing tongue and Islamic fundamentalism sweeping war-torn Iran, the Satrapi family makes a decision to get Marjane safely away from Iran and place her temporarily in Vienna, Austria with a family friend. Her parents seemed positive throughout her move, but Marjane had a creeping suspicion that this would be the last time she lived with her parents, even through endless reassurances that they would see her in six months time. In this turning point of the book, her parents tear up as she boards for Vienna, but seem strong and supportive with the decision they’ve made. One look back and Marjane’s mother has fainted, limp in the arms of her father and carried away like a child. This moment of weakness by her parents– who had seemed to be fearless protectors all her life– has shocked Marjane, leaving her with a terrible last image of her parents. This seems like the most climatic part of the book in the chapters we’ve read, acting as Marjane’s final exit from childhood and into a very adult adolescence.

Sunday Funny 3 – Visual Notes

Business Economics Visual Notes

When we first discussed this assignment, I was curious and skeptical. It took me some time to think of a class in which visual notes could really further my understanding of the material. I chose Business Economics. The process of formulating these notes was not too difficult, as this specific class is very real-world application oriented and essentially, a visual class in it of itself. I enjoyed being able to genuinely “doodle” for a class without feeling like it would affect my understanding of the material (as it has in the past because the essence of my doodling generally did not relate to the topic we were discussing). Truthfully, drawing a literal example of a price ceiling and a price floor has solidified my understanding of both – something that I previously was having trouble differentiating.

After completing this task, I recognize the positive aspects of this form of note taking. With that being said, however, the concept of drawing pictures to represent whole ideas does not seem time-effective or fully descriptive enough to cover an entire lecture. In the future, perhaps I will take visual notes after regular notes to draw out examples and further engrave the concepts in my head. All in all, I enjoyed making my brain think with a less traditional method.

Visual Notes

This process was really fun for me. I normally love art but I never thought of using art as a tool to incorporate my class notes. This is for my Art History class and some major concepts we need to learn. I found visual note taking to be particularly useful because it really helps me understand the structure and style of the building when I try to draw it more than just looking at the picture. It was slightly time consuming but I don’t think I’ll ever forget the concepts and notes on that page.

I decided to use macroeconomics for the visual note-taking assignment, because I felt that Macro-economics, a subject where there are a lot of connections and terms, would be a useful seeing in a visual format. I at first had trouble initially starting, but after beginning to draw/write I started to get more into it. I feel like for certain subjects such as my financial accounting and macroeconomics class, visual note-taking would honestly be a useful way to further better imprint the information into my brain.  I feel that it would be hard for me to take visual notes during a class since I’m not used to this new style and I personally felt I had to use a-lot more effort and attention when visually note-taking. But, this can be useful prior to a test or a quiz just for a great study guide to have a large amount of information on one page that I would understand would be a great study tool. I honestly enjoyed this process, it takes note taking, a dull and boring task, and incorporates creativity into it to make it not only fun but also productive.

I chose to take visual notes for my Statistics class. I often do a bit of visual note taking outside the margins of the paper, as a visual aid since visuals serve as a different medium of learning. Although, I did find being more heavy on the visuals an interesting task. I do believe that rather than just text, anyone taking notes would benefit greatly from any sort of visual (to an extent) that reflects the original text since it uses a different thought process which can help to retain information.

After my PSYC 111 class on Wednesday, I decided to take my written notes and draw them out.  Above is a visual representation of the “W.E.I.R.D” people that are Americans.  In the field of psychology, the majority of researchers use Americans as their test subjects.  However, Americans are a very specific type of people that do not represent the entire world population.  Concerns have raised about whether or not American psychology is actually trustworthy.

I enjoyed creating these visual notes because it made me think critically about the class lecture.  By spending a long time on my drawings, I now have a stronger understanding of the material.

Visual Note Taking

Visual note taking is something that I have never tried before but I found this technique incredibly interesting. I decided to create my project based on my Health 200 class. This is a class that prepares you to be a PHP (peer health partner). We spoke a lot about the roles that we play as a PHP as well as how students only get as much as we put into the presentation. Similarly, we focused a lot on the determinants of health such as environment, behavior, and biology.

I didn’t that that this assignment was too hard, especially since I find that most of the material that was covered in this lecture was very much common sense. While I did enjoy taking these notes, I do not think that I will use this technique often, especially for normal class lectures. I do think that this skill may be incredible helpful for exam prep though. For classes that are concept based, it seems as though taking visual notes on the material covered could be a great way to study and enforce the information before the exam!

Visual notes 1visual notes 2I decided to take visual notes for my Anthropology 101 class this week. In this particularly class, our teacher lectured on “The Darwinian Revolution”. In particular, we learned about natural selection and evolution. During the class I used my regular style of note taking and then after class I transformed my notes into visual notes.

The process of taking visual notes was very enjoyable for me because I am very creative and love to draw/doodle. Taking visual notes forced me to understand and think about the course content in a different light. Drawing the content I learned in class helped me visualize the process of natural s election and evolution more clearly. Visual note taking forced me to analyze the material instead of aimlessly repeating my teacher’s words verbatim into my notebook. Tow problems I faced during this assignment where that it took me a considerably longer time to draw out my notes and it was difficult for me to organize them. Although I cannot see myself continuing to take visual notes in the future, I enjoyed trying it out!
