Experiments in Visual Writing

Although the assignment Analyzing Vietnamerica was the most time consuming, it is by far one of the best of the assignments. I completely had no idea of what an “autoethnography” was until I was forced to grasp the Carolyn Ellis article. After grasping the meaning of postmodernism and auto ethnography, I completely knew what I would write about. Through my analysis of assessing whether Vietnamerica was autoethnographic, I showed how this text embodies the post modernist goals and ideas. I argue that Vietnamerica is somewhat autoethnographic , but I further that argument to show how it is not to support my postmodern claim. I found examples of how GB Tran actually argues for and against the term “autoethnography”, which proves that it did not completely fulfill the auto ethnography model. I am happy with my final product and I hope you guys are too. Here it is!

I have completed my Analyzing Vietnamerica assignment. This assignment took me long time because of the random order of the novel. Also, the article on autoethnography was very lengthy. I hope you enjoy it. You can read about the original assignment here.

I have published my Analyzing Vietnamerica project. I found that this was the most time consuming project that we had this semester. I had to first read the Carolyn Ellis essay several times to understand what an autoethnography was and then decide if Vietnamerica was one. After deciding that Vietnamerica was an autoethnography, I had to develop an argument with examples from Vietnamerica. This part was difficult because Vietnamerica is extremely confusing. For my Analyzing Vietnamerica project I wanted to let the Ellis text speak for itself, which enabled the aspects of Vietnamerica that I focused on to come out seamlessly along the way. I think I did a good job explaining the aspect that were autoethnographic, and had a strong counter argument to show that Tran was just telling the story of him and his family.  I believe that something like an autoethnography requires a certain kind of intentionality and foresight, and I do not believe Tran was trying to make an autoethnography.  I tried to show, and I think I was pretty successful, that memoirs by nature, especially in the case of Vietnamerica (or ones of immigrant families), will inevitably incorporate aspects of autoethnography.  Either way, I hope you enjoy my project. Here is my Analyzing Vietnamerica project! It took me quite some time to link a visual novel with a 18-page article introducing a new concept, but I managed it through. Here is the assignment link.

This Analyzing Vietnamerica project was definitely pretty challenging especially since I never knew what an autoethnography was before this class.
