Sunday Funnies 7: A Human Document

Screen capture of multiple pages of Tom Phillips' Humument

Due: 3/29

The British artist Tom Phillips is probably best known for a project that he began in 1966 and which he has continued ever since–he set himself the challenge to buy the first book he could find at a secondhand bookstore for threepence and to alter every page using drawing, painting, collage, and cut-up techniques to create an entirely new version.

First page of the 1970 edition of Humument.

First page of the 1970 edition of Humument.

He found W.H. Mallock’s A Human Document and combined the words in the title to create A Humument. Phillips not only created new art works from each of the 367 pages but has now completed five different editions of this altered book.

You can view pretty much the complete series of pages on Tom Phillips site here. You can choose pages, view the original and then view different versions of that page.

For this week’s funnies assignment, I want you to create your own visual poem-thing. You can find your own page to alter if you’d like, but I’ll bring in an old used book that you can take pages from too. Think of it as sort of a collaboration between yourself and the book’s original author or think of it as a game where you get to create new text but within the strict confines of the text available on the page.

Obviously, Tom Phillips has been doing this for almost 50 years and I’m not expecting you to produce work that is as polished or complex as his–nor that is necessarily as visually compelling. And it will probably feel very strange to you as you begin, but just let yourself be playful and experiment with your task. You do not need to be a professional artist to make these pages, but you probably do need to be able to relax your desire to be in control of what you produce and you probably need to turn off the self-critical voice that will tell you that you’re doing it wrong.

Alter your page using whatever methods or tools you prefer, then scan the page in color at a high resolution as a JPG or PNG file and load it to your site. You might include in your post the text of your altered page.

Sunday Funnies #6: Visualize a Quote

PicMonkey Collage

I chose this quote by Socrates for my  Sunday Funnies Assignment because it really made me think. Often times we do not let ourselves try something because we do not think that we are ‘supposed’ to do that. Or, when we do go to something or see something we are left disappointed because we pictured it turning out differently or being different. I chose these photos to portray this quote because the one on the left was of my high school tennis team in 2013 when we were at the semi-finals of our state tournament. We took this photo as a joke and did end up losing the match (the photo and losing have nothing to do with each other). But, the photo on the right is us after we won our regional tournament for the first time in six years. If we don’t think that we can beat a certain team, we don’t but when we do take a risk and don’t have expectations, we are able to accomplish everything.

Sunday Funny #6

For this assignment I chose a quote from C.S Lewis. I chose this quote because I think it describes love from a very different perspective. I also liked the imagery that the author used in this quote. I represented the quote with a collage composed of unrelated images. I tried to create different tones using distinct shades of gray and different font colors. The size of the images in the collage also represent the importance of the sentences they represent (in my opinion, of course).

Sunday Funny 6

Sunday funny 6 Mountain climber

I chose this quote because I wanted to convey that all things are impossible if you don’t even make an attempt in my Sunday Funny.I thought that the progression of climbing a mountain and finally making it to the summit exemplified this idea. If a person doesn’t try to climb the mountain then they will never reach the top.

I decided to use a quote from the 2006 movie V for Vandetta. This scene can be found here. I chose this quote because I really thought it used very clever diction to produce a very eloquent and smart speech. I first recorded myself saying this speech using quicktime player, and then uploaded to animoto. I then uploaded photos to go along with the speech. I used the following photos-

For this week’s Sunday Funnies, I was inspired by a quote by Buddha. I thought that it was an interesting quote in many levels, in that buddhism is a religion in which individuals are to seek out their own salvation, and that it is quite an inspirational saying, especially for those who are always surrounded by competition, and need some kind of motivation – namely college students like me.

For this week’s Sunday Funny, I selected a quote by Jimmy Dean that currently resonates with me, which can be found here. I am at a crossroads about several things and am facing obstacles that I cannot directly control or fix. That being said, my mentality is to move around my impediments and go on. The pictures I chose are not my own and as such, I have included their appropriate citations below.
